Why Test for the Big 6?
With new regulations put in place, the necessity for testing for the Big 6 strains of E. coli has become paramount. Although most strains of E. coli are innocuous—and often even beneficial—to daily human life, some strains (O26, O45, O103, O111, O121, O145, and O157, particularly) are highly pathogenic to humans, particularly the elderly, young, and those with compromised immune systems. These strains are common carriers for the Shiga toxin genes, which cause intense and sometimes deadly disease in its hosts. And because these strains of E. coli make up only a small percentage of the E. coli strains out there, testing must be targeted toward only these dangerous strains in order to better protect the public while considering your company's bottom line.
